Like father, Like son.

On one of our trips to walmart hell a bit ago Porter had to use the restroom so Burk took him in there and a funny little Porter moment ensued. Upon entering the bathroom Porter spied a fire alarm and asked Burk why there was a fire drill in the bathroom. Burk told him that was a fire alarm, not a fire drill and that if you were in the bathroom taking a dump they wanted you to have a way to know if the building was on fire. Porter asked what if he wasn't finished and Burk said "Porter, if the building was on fire would you want to get out or finish?" After thinking about it for a minute Porter replied "I think I would like to finish." The man using the urinal next to them who had been pretending to be oblivious to the conversation could no longer hold it and burst out laughing.

A well needed break

Burk and I received a gift card to the Providence Inn B&B for Christmas. We got that many years ago as a Christmas surprise and now we ask for it every year. We have been to a good number of B&B's but this is by far our favorite. The prices are better than most, the breakfast is outstanding, and we have never had a less than stellar experience there. Anyway, Burk and I decided we would go on the weekend between our birthdays and spend some well needed quality time. We stayed two nights in two different rooms. This one is the Victorian. We stayed or first night in the Mediterranean palms. It was also nice. We played a lot of scrabble, went to Walmart like three times, to hastings and to Fredrico's for ham and cheese salads. We had also taken the first season of Weeds on DVD, as a side note we are completely hooked on it, you really get caught up in that lady's drama. Before coming home Monday we went to a little place called Pounders for lunch. It was sooooo good. It is Hawaiian. I had pulled pork, and teriyaki chicken with rice and macaroni salad. Burk had pulled pork and ton katsu. It was exceptional. We will go back there again for sure. We were so excited to go but I was a little worried about leaving Rebb overnight for the first time. As much as I really needed his time away I had kind of a hard time and cried both nights when it was the boys bedtime. That is my time everyday with each boy where there are no other distractions and they are the only focus. I think it made it tougher because when I called to check on them and talk to Porter he got on the phone and said "Hi mommy, do you want to talk to uncle Cody?, don't worry you will see us on Monday, love you bye." Literally that was it. Really it makes me happy that he was so happy and having fun it was just funny. We had such a great time and it was so nice to be able to have full conversations without little voices interrupting every other word. Anyway husbands if you are looking for a great way to get serious points you should check it out. We give it two thumbs up, five stars and a hell yeah!! Thanks Papa Joe and Boggy. We loved it again.

This is one of my favorite rooms. The bathroom is huge, and beautiful.
This is the enormous double headed shower.

Eating our words!!

Burk and I both grew up in houses where "remember who you are" (sometimes even followed by "and what you represent") was kind of a theme. As a result we now say that to our own boys. Lately we have switched it up to our own version "because Benton's don't do that/act that way. But it all comes down to the same old meaning. The following is a sample of a common conversation in our lives
Porter: can I run in the hall (at church)
Myself: no
Porter: but "he" is doing it
Myself: well I am not "his "mother, & Benton's don't act like that.
The other night Burk was getting Porter through the bath and ready for bed, he told him to get ready and then they would read. Porter loves to read Junie B. Jones before bed and we generally read a chapter or two each night. This is also the privilege that is lost when he takes too long with the nightly process. On this particular night Porter had screwed around and taken forever. Consequently there was no Junie B. A minute or so after the initial crying had stopped I heard Porter call Burk back into his room to ask him "what he would be changing his last name too" Burk asked what he was talking about and he answered that Benton's don't lie and that burk had said he would read to him and did not. This kid is a little to smart for his britches. Or maybe truthfully he just a little too smart for our britches.

RETRACTION!!

I want to take back all the times as a kid that I didn't want to take a nap. This picture makes me want to sleep right now. He looks so peaceful and calm. I love the sounds of Rebb napping he has been a snorer from day one. It is so cute. He sleeps like he is dead though. Sometimes if he gets woken up before he was ready it takes him quite a while to catch up with what is going on around him. But I love it most when he wakes on his own on a Saturday or Sunday and starts talking. The dada, mama, aahh, oohoo coming from his room is the sweetest noise ever.
p.s. Do you love the shirt with his name and Burk's number on the back? It was a gift from my beautiful friend Brittney who sells vinyl of every kind, for your walls, clothes ect. Call me if you need some I will give you her info.

Back from hiatus!!

So I have been on a small hiatus, (NOT from lack of things to report) but am back in blogging business. And to my friend and loyal reader Jane B. we haven't had my birthday dinner yet. Today is Burk's dinner, taco's and fries. Yes, really! Mine is coming in a few weeks. That's just how we roll in the Benton Fam.
