Burk and I both grew up in houses where "remember who you are" (sometimes even followed by "and what you represent") was kind of a theme. As a result we now say that to our own boys. Lately we have switched it up to our own version "because Benton's don't do that/act that way. But it all comes down to the same old meaning. The following is a sample of a common conversation in our lives
Porter: can I run in the hall (at church)
Myself: no
Porter: but "he" is doing it
Myself: well I am not "his "mother, & Benton's don't act like that.
The other night Burk was getting Porter through the bath and ready for bed, he told him to get ready and then they would read. Porter loves to read Junie B. Jones before bed and we generally read a chapter or two each night. This is also the privilege that is lost when he takes too long with the nightly process. On this particular night Porter had screwed around and taken forever. Consequently there was no Junie B. A minute or so after the initial crying had stopped I heard Porter call Burk back into his room to ask him "what he would be changing his last name too" Burk asked what he was talking about and he answered that Benton's don't lie and that burk had said he would read to him and did not. This kid is a little to smart for his britches. Or maybe truthfully he just a little too smart for our britches.
